  FOREST GENETICS

Arunachal Pradesh is one of the richest states in genetic bio-diversity, variability & speciation of plant species. Hence the man made forests irrespective of afforestation or reforestation has taken the lead over natural regeneration by raising about 15 thousand hectare plantation of different tree species every year in the territory. Unless we use the certified quality seeds for plantation, we can not predict the future of those plantation in terms of survival, growth, clear bole, disease and pest resistance and quality of wood etc and therefore the fluctuation in target i.e. maximum timber production per unit ( area in a time bound manner is bound to affect if the research priorities are not attended and accelerated. At the same time, demands for wood are increasing. Tree improvement is one avenue by which we can increase both future wood volume and value. Hence tree improvement is a vital component of modern forestry.(Click here to read more)

  ORCHIDOLOGY

The state is known for its rich orchid flora. In order to develop this natural resource in a sustainable manner, the division of Orchidology is engaged in documentation, scientific studies and extension activities aimed at technological development in orchid farming and floriculture with people's participation and contribute towards economy of the local people. The Institute is located at Van Vihar (27° 4' N & 93° 36' E), Itanagar in the Capital complex along Itanagar- Gohpur road in Papum Pare district on an elevated plot of land on the bank of River Chimpu. With the hilly surroundings, it enjoys salubrious climate with moderate warm summers and cool winters. The central location facilitates accessibility to other institutes and organizations situated in Itanagar in addition to better networking with national and regional institutions.(Click here to read more)

  ECOLOGY DIVISION

Arunachal Pradesh falls under 18th biodiversity "Hotspots" in the world and is situated in the Eastern Himalayan bio-geographic region. The state is having rich Cultural and Agri- Horti- forestry diversity. Recent development impacts and influence have made considerable change in life style and on the socio economic development of the people. By seeing biodiversity richness, great ethnic diversity, fragile ecosystem, role of local people - the stakeholders of bio-diversity in management, a sustainable developmental approach based on ecological principles suiting to the region is need of the hour.   FOREST ZOOLOGY

The division envisages to bring to light the faunal diversity, its ethnozoological values and traditional knowledge systems in the state. A museum development and extension programmes are also in the aims of this discipline. (Click here to read more)

  SYSTEMATIC BOTANY

The task of this division is to botanically explore the state and bring out the economical potential particularly the non timber forest produce like bamboo, cane, medicinal plants etc. in addition to documentation of ethnobotanical and traditional knowledge of the local communities.(Click here to read more)

  SOIL SCIENCE

This division's objective covers forest soil classification, soil analysis and amelioration, phytochemical screening of forest plants etc. (Click here to read more)

  SILVICULTURE
Silviculture pertains to the establishment, development, care and reproduction of forest crops. The objectives of Silviculture studies are :
To derive environmental benefits
Raising species of more economic value
Production of plants of high quality timber species
Production of more volume per unit area
Reduction of rotation period
Afforestation of blank areas
Creation of plantation
Introduction of exotics
Employment potentials
Increased production of fuels and fodder quality
To increase raw materials for forest based industries.
Studies on NTFPs

The goal of this division is to evolve Silvicultural knowledge on indigenous species and thereby support the mass afforestation programmes and ensure the successful plantation activities. Progress in this direction are :

Establishment of Van Vigyan Kendra, Chessa
Completion of phenological studies on more than 100 native species.
Standardization of nursery techniques for most of the important local tree species, medicinal plants, bamboo and other NTFPs.
Establishment of over 43 observation/sample/linear increments plots.
Establishment of preservation plots in different forest types.
Completion of performance trial on 17 fast growing species.
Demonstration plots of multitier plantation models.
Establishment of bamboo and cane demonstration plots at Tipi, Chessa, Pasighat and Namsai.

Under Silviculture division 6 (six) nos. of Research Ranges in different locations have been established viz. Dirang, Tipi, Chessa, Itanagar and Namsai. Of these Research Ranges, Chessa, Itanagar and Tipi are situated along the Semi evergreen type of forests and can study such species characteristic of this forest. The Research Range , Namsai is situated in the wet evergreen Dipterocarpus forests which is located in South Bank. To study the high altitude forestry problems, a Range is functioning at Dirang. These Research Ranges undertake and assist Silvicultural and other Research Progress of all the scientific divisions of the Institute.(Click here to read more)
