The state is known for its rich orchid flora. In order
to develop this natural resource in a sustainable manner,
the division of Orchidology is engaged in documentation,
scientific studies and extension activities aimed at
technological development in orchid farming and floriculture
with people’s participation and contribute towards
economy of the local people. Significant achievements
are:

EXTERNALLY
FUNDED PROJECTS:
|
|
| |
Since
1994, besides State plan project, orchidology divission
has started implementing projects sponsored by various
external govermental and non-govermental agencies likeWWF-India,
ICFRE, DST, DBT, NBRI etc. for various research and
extention activites on orchids in state. Till now, the
divission has carried out/ being carried out 11 projects.

ACTIVITIES UNDER STATE PLAN: |
|
| |
|
|
| |
A. CONSERVATION |
|
| |
i. |
In situ conservation
: Out of about 600 species of orchids
reported so far from Arunachal Pradesh, about
400 species are being conserved in situ in the
Protected Area Network of the State. About 200
species are recorded from Sessa Orchid Sanctuary
alone. Tours are being conducted every year in
unexplored areas to enumerate the orchid flora
of various sanctuaries, national parks and biosphere
reserves of the state. |
ii. |
Ex situ conservation
: About 50,000 orchids of about 200 species are
rescued from degraded forest areas and brought
under cultivation at Orchid research centre, Tipi;
Orchid nursery, Sessa; Orchid range, Dirang; SFRI,
Itanagar as a part of Ex situ conservation as
per the climatic requirement of the species. |
iii. |
Orchid germplasm bank:
Created at Orchid Research centre, Tipi. This
is one of the largest orchid germplasm banks in
the country comprising of about 200 native tropical
species, 60 exotic species and about 50 exotic
hybrids of various groups.Various new species
discovered from Arunachal Pradesh and various
hybrids developed at Orchid Centre, tipi can be
seen under cultivation here. |

B. RESEARCH |
|
| |
i. |
Production of Seedlings
: Over the last 15 years, it has been possible
to standardize protocols for the in vitro culture
(seed and tissue) of 50 rare, endangered and ornamental
orchids, 10 native hybrids and 14 Cymbidium hybrid
mericlones, 2 exotic Phalaenopsis hybrids and
one Dendrobium hybrid. Technique have also been
standardized for regenerating seedlings from auxilary
bud of Aerides rosea and from leaves of Renades
'Arunodaya'. Thus over 1,60,000 seedling micropropogated
and transferred from the lab to the field. |
ii. |
Breeding : Over the last twenty
years, it has been possible to produce 15 inter
and intrapecific hybrids and two hybrid genera.
out of them, five hybrids have so far been registered
under the international Registration Authority
for orchid Hybrids by the Orchid registrar, Nottingham,
U.K. |
iii. |
Polyploidy & Orchid Mycorihiza:
Research studies are in progress on induction
of polyploidy in commercially viable orchids;
and on possibility of use of orchid mycorhiza
for improved cultivation and successful establishment
of laboratory produced seedlings in the field.
|
iv. |
Taxonomy: During the past 25
years, 2 new orchid genera, 34 new species, 30
new records to India and about 130 new additions
to Arunachal Pradesh have been reported. |
